Within the last two days my workload at office was huge in a way which made me miss out on things. One of those was blogging (as you might have noticed, last entry: June 5th). Now I'm back and I found a new hobby: De-stashing. I took a good look not just at my sock yarn stash, but also took solid left-overs for a sock-yarn-left-overs loving knitting friend. Last weekend some single skeins and more left-overs were added to the pile (winks a bit).

Well, and some time ago I started crocheting patches for an afghan (started=crocheted one patch in order to see whether I liked it). In the last few days I was so exhausted that I came home in the evenings, turned on an audio book already known to me and dully crocheted blanket patches. Usually this combination doesn't work out. Either I have to have an interesting book, then the knitting may be dull, or I have to have something thrilling in my hands, then the book can be well-known. At present the dull-dull way is the only one to go. The estonian shawlette is beyond me, crochet patches work out.

The pattern is thus: two strands of sock yarn, 51 chains, one single crochet into the third chain, then repeat one chain, one single crochet, leaving out one chain, crochet to the end, turn (25 single crochets, if anyone's interested); next row: two chains, one single crochet into the chain of the row below, one chain, repeat to the end, turn. Crochet 45 rows, leave the last loop, cut the yarn. 42 grams per patch, 49 chains with slightly bulkier sockyarn, 53 chains with slightly thinner sockyarn, works out, right? Of this I made 10 patches, each a square of 21cm. And the stash of sock yarn which I don't want to knit into socks, melts down.

Well, I consider myself a most dedicated knitter ("Knitter" for the fans of the Yarn Harlot among us). I was never really into crocheting, it was somehow too much like "I have to look at what I'm doing" for my taste. But at present that's exactly what I need. Don't look up, the next single crochet is the most important of all and - well - another patch done.

The only knitting that parallels this is a new border to the Pi Are Square shawl. I knitted this in 2009 and have always found that the edging in the changing colour makes this look like a gown at the hair dresser's. So I ripped out the entire border (150 grams of Kauni, if anyone's interested) and knit a new border to the 680 stitches of the final row in solid purple. This has also the grade of dullness I need at present. There is no picture yet, it will come, when done. Half of the stitches is sorted out, halfway to go and then the I-Cord border to the front and done it is.
