Granny-Decke und Fäden Vernähen | Granny Afghan and darning in ends

Eine Frage hat mich erreicht: Ist es nicht nervig, diese ganzen Fäden zu vernähen an einer Decke, die fast in jeder Reihe die Farbe wechselt?

I've been asked a question: Isn't it annoying to have to darn in all those ends in an afghan that changes colour every other row?

Ich finde nicht. Aber ich glaube, da hat mich die Strickerei der letzten Jahre ziemlich verändert. Ich fand das auch furchtbar, am Ende diese Zilliarden von Fäden vernähen zu müssen. Und wisst Ihr was? Ich mache das einfach nicht mehr.

I don't think so. But I think my excessive knitting in the last years has changed me in approaching that. Indeed I used to think it's awful to have to darn in those gazillions of ends at the end of a project. And you know what? I just don't do it any more. 

Wie, ich vernähe nicht mehr am Ende? Ein Strahler erscheint, verfolgt mich auf der Blogbühne, trägt die große Sprechblase "was für eine schlampige Frau!". Und ich stehe da und grinse mir einen.

What, I don't darn in ends in the end? A spotlight appears, haunts me on the big blog stage, carrying a huge speechbubble: "What a slapdash woman!". And I'm standing there with a slight smirk on my face. 

Das Zauberwort ist "am Ende". Das ist es, was ich nicht mehr tue. Natürlich wird jeder einzelne Faden säuberlich vernäht, Frau Rink, die Handarbeitslehrerin meiner Kinderzeit und strickerisches Überich, würde mir sonst die Beulenpest schicken. Ich mache das einfach unterwegs. Und da gibt es mehrere Möglichkeiten, zugegebenermaßen beim Stricken mehr als beim Häkeln (soweit ich weiß), aber alle sind ziemlich prima.

The magic word here is "in the end". That is what I'm not doing any more. Of course every single end is darned in neatly, Ms Rink, the needlework-teacher of my youth and knitterly Überich, would send me bubonic plague otherwise. I just do it as I go. And there are several possibilities, admittedly a few more in knitting than crocheting (so far as my knowledge reaches), but all of them pretty neat.

1. Wenn ich mit reiner Wolle stricke, die nicht superwash-behandelt ist, filze ich die Enden aneinander. Wie das geht, habe ich hier mal gezeigt. Das funktioniert natürlich nur dann, wenn ein Knäuel zu Ende geht, nicht bei Farbenwechsel.

1. If I knit with pure wool not treated with superwash, I felt the strands. I've shown here how to do this. That of course only works in cases where I have to attach a new ball. It doesn't work with colour change.

2. Eine Möglichkeit für Superwash-Wolle oder andere Garne, die nicht "kleben", ist der so genannte Russian Join. Mit diesem Stichwort findet man einige Videos bei Youtube. Das funktioniert prima, wenn das Garn sich nicht auffädelt (wie das beispielsweise manchmal bei Viskose passiert), und hält bombensicher, wenn man ein Paranoiker ist wie ich und immer ungefähr 8cm Faden einnäht. Und das Beste überhaupt: Das funktioniert auch bei Farbwechsel, das hat mir eine Strickkollegin gezeigt, die dieses unglaubliche Stück (Ravelry-Projekt) gebastelt hat. Der Kniff ist so: Man strickt bis zur siebtletzten Masche, macht den Russian Join über ca. 8cm, strickt den Rest und wenn eine Masche der alten Reihe in der neuen Farbe oder eine Masche in der neuen Reihe mit der alten Farbe gestrickt ist, fällt das nicht auf. Geilomat, das funktioniert prima!

2. If  you use superwash-wool or other material which doesn't cling together well, a good solution is the so called "Russian Join". With this tag there are quite some videos on Youtube showing how to do this. It works great, if the yarn doesn't split (what happens e.g. with some rayon blends), and it won't come apart, if you are paranoid like me and Russian join the thing for about three inches. Best of all: This solution works also with colour changes.  A knitting buddy showed me that, who knitted this thing of wonder (Ravelry project). It goes like that: You knit to the seventh last stitch, Russian join the old and new colour for a bit more than 3 inches, knit the last six stitches. And if one stitch of the old row will be in the new colour or vice versa, no one will notice. Great that is, and works fabulously.

3. Eine weitere Möglichkeit, alte und neue Fäden bei Knäuelwechsel loszuwerden, ist es, sie direkt einzuweben. Ich gebe zu, ich habe hier einen leichten Vorteil: Ich kann (gesegnet sei meine Schwester, die mir das beigebracht hat, als ich ungefähr 13 war) mühelos mit zwei Fäden über einem Finger stricken, das macht das Leben hier sehr einfach. Wenn der Fadenwechsel kommt, nehme ich den neuen Faden auf wie eine zweite Farbe und stricke abwechselnd darüber und darunter mit dem alten Faden, so dass der neue Faden eingewoben wird. Mir ist es eigentlich wurscht, wie lange ich das mache, meist so 10cm lang. Dann wird gewechselt. Meist passt das alte Endchen nicht mehr über die Hand, macht aber nichts, dann halte ich das wieder ungefähr 10cm lang zwischen Daumen und Zeigefinger, bis es komplett eingewoben ist (ich bin wirklich ein Hasenfuß, richtig?).

Das funktioniert aber nur, wenn glatt rechts gestrickt wird. Bei linken Maschen blitzt das eingewobene Garn auf der Vorderseite durch und das sieht unordentlich aus. Aber das funktioniert dafür auch beim Farbenwechsel in glatt rechts.

3. Another way to get rid of old and new ends when changing balls is to weave them in. I admit, I have a bit of an advantage here. I'm able (blessed be my sister teaching me this when I was a teenager) to knit effortlessly with two strands over one finger. This makes life very easy here. When I approach the point, where to change a ball, I simply take the new yarn over my finger too and knit alternately above and below this new strand with the old one. Thus the new strand is weaved in before I even knit with it. And I don't care for how long I do this, mostly it's around 4 inches. Then I change, take the new strand as working yarn and knit above and below the old strand until it's gone. If I did everything right, I'm by this stage not able any more to strand the old yarn over my hand, so I just hold it between the left thumb and index finger, until it is gone, which will also be around 4 inches (I'm a chicken, aren't I?!?). 

This unfortuantely only works with stockinette stitch. In purl stitches the weaved strand will show on the right side and this looks untidy. However, this also works with colour changes in stockinette.

4. Und wenn das alles nicht hilft, wie in diesem Fall, bleibt mir nur, alle paarundzwölf Reihen die Fäden zu vernähen, die bis dahin entstanden sind. Auch das funktioniert fein. Wenn ich immer nur so 20 Fäden zu vernähen habe, kostet mich das 10 Minuten und der Keks ist gegessen. Fällt gar nicht auf, dass ich etwas Unangenehmes tue, ist ja schon vorbei, bevor ich richtig drin bin.

4. And if all this doesn't work like with this project, I'm stuck with darning in all ends every twelvesomething rows, which have occurred until then. This also works fine. If I have to darn in 20 ends, it's 10 minutes and Bob's your uncle. It won't show that I'm doing something boring, because it's done before I even think of it. 

Mein Ziel ist es, immer am Ende eines Projektes noch den letzten Faden vernähen zu müssen und dann direkt fertig zu sein. Also werden alle Fäden vorher vernäht, möglichst schon die Knöpfe angenäht, die vorderen Bordüren gemacht und alles andere, damit am Ende wirklich nur dieser eine wunderbare letzte Faden zwischen mir und einem neuen Teil steht.

My aim is to have the last strand of yarn left to darn in at the end of every project. So all ends will be gotten rid of way before that, if possibe all buttonbands done, all buttons sowed on and all the rest of it. So there is that one single wonderful last strand between me and a new item.

Und jetzt bitte, könnten wir den Schlamperei-Strahler aus meinem Gesicht nehmen? Der blendet und  macht Kopfweh.

And now, could we please, please get that slapdashery-spotlight ouf of my face? It's glaring at me and I get a headache.
